McLaren-Porsche and Ferrari have both made a full comeback to the Formula One World Championship after being forced to retire in 2018.
The German team is currently the fourth team in the championship after the Mercedes, Williams and Toro Rosso, and the French outfit has only won once in its five-year history.
In 2018, the reigning world champions Ferrari was forced to take a series of retirements including Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez, with their 2016 world champion Sebastian Vettel stepping in for the latter.
It is understood that both teams have been planning for 2018, with McLaren-based engine supplier McLaren expecting a full rebuild and a return to the top of the grid next year, while the Ferrari squad is looking to make a statement for next year.
Ferrari are still on track to take the title this year with reigning world champion Fernando Alonso, with Sergio Perez the frontrunner to secure a sixth successive victory.
It will be the first time in 10 years that Ferrari have won a championship with the team without Vettel as their main driver.
However, while Perez and Alonso are currently fighting for the title, both are looking to do so with the new Renault power unit.
Vettel has admitted he was frustrated by the lack of competitive testing in 2018, while Lewis Hamilton has also stated he felt a lack of progress in 2018 and is looking forward to 2017.
However Perez’s new Mercedes team has a new driver lined up for next season with the Spaniard joining Sebastian Valtteri Bottas.
Valtteris joined the team from Williams last year after leaving Toro Rosos and is the latest addition to the team after winning the title in 2014.
He is currently fourth in the standings.
“We are very optimistic for the future, especially in the new year,” Perez said.
“With our new engine, we can do very well in 2017, but it is still a new car for us.”
McLaren are looking forward with new drivers for next weekend’s race in Qatar, with a new Mercedes power unit expected to be announced soon.
